Creative Techniques in Nature PhotographyIf you are anything of a naturalist or photographer you will want to read this book; the author is both, as well as being a practising professional biologist. For the naturalist, there are chapters on cameras and their suitability for the different tasks, the accessories used in nature photography, and on specialised photographic techniques. For the amateur and semi-professional photographer wishing to take his or her interest in animals and plants a stage further, there are chapters on some of the more interesting biology associated with the different animal and plant groups; the better photographers understands their subject, the more interesting their photographs will be.

The book touches on the whole of the natural world - including micro-organisms - and discusses the availability, both from natural sources and from specialist suppliers, of subjects to be photographed. Each chapter deals with the practical problems involved in nature photography in the studio and in the field, and important ideas and techniques are illustrated by over 170 black and white and colour photographs and specially prepared drawings. Several new pieces of equipment have been designed, including a flight tunnel and interrupted light-beam assembly for photographing insects in free flight. The appendices contain useful tables, relating the geological periods to the emergence of the main plant and animal groups, and giving the main classifications of the plant and animal kingdoms.

As part of the author's dual approach, he not only discusses the photography from the naturalist's point of view, but also mentions the aesthetic considerations to be borne in mind. This unusually wide-ranging book is for those whose interests have made them want to capture on film as skilfully as possible some of the most elusive and beautiful examples of animal and plant life.
